woods, then he was with Richand she didn't want to think about what had happened to him then. If she did, the panic pulsing at the edge of her consciousness would invade her thoughts full force and she would be unable to function. She would make a circle of the area, and if she didn't find Chris, she would walk out and get to the sheriff's office.
The longer McCall remained missing, the more worried D.J. became. What she wouldn't give to have him whisper in her ear, to have him kiss her and touch her and tell her she was his soul mate. They'd found each other at last. All the words she'd disparaged earlier would sound like wondrous promises when contrasted to the intense fear growing inside herthe very real fear that Rich had found Christian before she had, and that she'd lost the love of her life before she'd ever had him.
"Christian, where are you?" she whispered on a sigh.
A hand clamped onto her shoulder. She winced as pain shot through her injured limb. D.J. opened her mouth to scream. Another hand clamped over her lips, stifling the sound of terror before it could be born.
"Don't scream. Don't fight. Just stay still and shut up, D.J."
The voice in her ear was as familiar as her own. D.J. shut up, but she didn't keep still. She turned her head and met the eyes of the man who held her captive.
